I want to get my boyfriend a new fishing pole, but I have no idea what kind is good. He has a little 3 or 4ft pole that he uses on the river and a 10ft surf caster for the ocean. He did mention that he wanted a 6ft pole. I want to get him something that he can use on the river and at the ocean, but I've noticed that there are separate poles for freshwater and saltwater??
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Sarah

Re: fishing pole?
Sat, November 24, 2007 - 11:27 PMa Ugly stick is pretty good for both, They are supposed to be really difficult to break and have really good action on them.
I use a spinning reel cause it is easier for me to cast and I don't have to worry about bird nests (line getting tangled in reel) like you do with bait casters. Well not as often anyways. Medium heavy on the reel and about 20 pound test line. Prefferably the thread line (Iforget what it is called, but it is really good).
As for the difference between fresh and salt, depends on where you are fishing. Freshwater you only need a spin combo (or atleast that is what I use). For Salt water it all depends on if you are shore fishing, pier fishing, boat fishing, etc. But if he is just going off piers and shore an Ugly stick with a spin reel should work. -

Re: fishing pole?
Wed, March 26, 2008 - 12:30 PMa 6ft fenwick fast action medium or medium heavy power.the test rateing is like 6-12 or 6-15. a shimano sedona real is really good for the price ... total setup is about 100 dollars . i think the real size is 2500. I use this for bass , catfish, fishing bays , and the surf . a little small for the ocean but i've taken plenty of halibut on it .
for a similar price shimano 7ft heavy action cvs-70m-2. this is a 2 piece rod they make the same one in a 1 piece which is better but good luck getting it in your car ! suggest the same real but larger like a 4000 if they don't make a 4000 in sedona get the sonora . I have the sonora cuz i use it at the ocean and salt water & sand are VERY hard on reals . this is great for big bass and catfish in thick cover . it has PLENTY of muscle for any sort of shore fishing in the ocean . piers, jetty, surf, whatever. Its my go to ocean rod.fishing more then 12 or 15 lb test from shore is rediculous and means less bites and more tangles.
stick with these brands and you can't go wrong for poles
fenwick
shimano
g-loomis
st. croix
depends what you want to spend
for reals go with shimano . any shimano over 30 dollars is pretty good and sedona is 50 . sedona is more then enough real for any fisherman . they do however make reals up to like 500 bucks for freshwatter and thousands for salt water
i stick with spinning
