It's nice to have at least someone to bullshit with...... I'll be home until some one wants to go. I would have jumped at this opportuntity if it was offered to me, Gf's out of town, best friend(s) busy, put this out to all of my friends list and not one call.
Imagine the scene..
Its just getting light, the mist is rising off the water as you set up your poles on the dock and cast in to the dead calm lake. There are fish jumping all around you and there are bubble patches as far as the eye can see..
"Today is going to be a good fishing day" you say to yourself as you sit back and wait for the first bite of the day..

In the far off distance you hear the roar of several outboard motors.. they get closer... within minutes the dock is surrounded by at least a dozen boats and the 'persons' on board are netting some small fish called Shad to use as bait. These little fish die in 15 minutes or so if you dont keep the water oxygenated.. so i was told several times as the boats drifted between me and where i had cast my bait.
With a roar of outboards, the boats take off accross the lake... to fish for some other little fish called a Crappie..

You look round at the scene.. no bubbles, no fish jumping...

Sunday morning...
As above.. Plus".. "Is this your bobber"?.. one says as it drives directly over your line and your bobber dissapears under the bow of the boat..

Monday morning..
As above... Plus: BANG, CLUNK, SHOUT, DING, BANG, CLUNK...

Me:- "Will you keep the noise down please"
Him:- "Why"?
Me:- "I'm trying to catch some fish"...
Him:- "Fish cant hear noises"!.. (With a laugh)..

At which point i give up, pack up and come home..

Why the f**k are these 'persons' so inconsiderate and ignorant of others who are fishing peacfully and were obviously there before they arrived?...
Is this a general scene for the American boater?... They can hardly be called 'fishermen' in my opinion

If you are one of these boaters.. i hope your boat springs a leak at the deepest part of the lake!..

Hey whats going on folks. New member to the tribe here. My names Mike, I'm from Monterey, California. We have some nice lakes around here, Nacimiento, San Antonio, Coyote, etc., with some nice bass in them. I just recently got back into fishing thanks to my parents.

My setup:

Rod: St Croix Legend Tournament (TBC66MHF) [6'6" MED-HEAVY POWER] {Bass Series Jig-N-Worm}
Reel: Quantum ENERGY PTxm

My question:

When I throw a Carolina rig or a Texas rig on the line what exactly are the steps to take after the bait hits the water, and how fast should I reel it back into the boat? What kind of movements should I be doing with the rod? Should I be moving the tip up and down or side to side? Do I need a heavy weight to make it sink fast? This time of year should I be throwing close to the shore or a ways out? How far out?

I get frusturated when I fish, because I'm clueless when it comes to the above questions.

Thanks guys...

I live in south eastern North Dakota and LOVE to fish. I grew up in South Dakota, and know some of the lakes there as well. If anyone is ever coming to ND to fish, I can get reports for you, or if you need any help with directions or anything.

Luckily this is a great state to fish, and we've had a pretty good year. My husband and I go at least once a month, but much more in the spring, and also in the fall until it gets too cold or windy. I'm a fair weather fisher most of the time. I like it to be warmer than 50 degrees with winds less than 15 mph. But I have been out there when it has been quite bad, although I'm not really excited to go out in 25 mph wind gusts, or when its so cold I need my parka to be in the boat. Ice fishing is another story though and I can stand alot more cold when I'm tucked away in the fish house with the heater on. :)

Last weekend we brought home 30 really nice perch, Mmmmmm!
This is an odd year, so we will have Pinks (Humpies) coming and they will be every where, fun to catch but horrible table fare.

If anyone needs any info about certain rivers or tactics in this area, let me know.

Things should pick up in July and really heat up in the fall.

This year we upgraded the Motor from an older 225 Evinrude to a Suzuki on the boat so fuel cost were not astronomical we burnt about $100 everytime we went out.

Got a great deal on some portable marine gas tanks and redid some of the rods. Still drooling over the big reels. Want to do some serious fishing this winter to make up for it.

This sounded like a perfect excuse for a day on the beach - and it paid off well. Caught about five sharks throughout the day - all blacktip, all reletively small (from 16" to 30"). They were so thick, you could see them swimming around as you're wading out there! You could literally drop your line next to you, and have a dozen or so little ones swarming on your bait. Here's a picture of the 30" blacktip I caught - lightweight tackle, really, 15# test, with a simple shock leader and wire hook leader - wished I'dve been using the ultra-light w/ 8# test on this one, would've been a much better fight!

Pat have me a hand and there you have it. Normally we would release something this small, but it looked pretty much almost dead when I got it to the boat. I do not know how you could handle a larger one. My pals Lou and Tim caught 2 last week, 10 and 12 feet, 180+ pounds. I will have to say mine is around 70 or 80.
Went out last weekend T-sharking in the 'yak, but I was having so much fun on the bait rig I just did that all day. I'm using a fishtrap on the end of a sabiki. I was drifting in from 20 feet to the breakers, casting out, sinking to the bottom, and jigging it like I was trying to make bait. Caught sand bass, calicos, and hali's, plus more perch on the sabiki than I could count. As usual plenty of smelties and well. This weekend more of the same...or...? Reports of some nice white sea bass at the pier are probably going to lure me in to deeper water and jig for WSB, threshers, and monster hali's.
If you are in the area and don't have a boat you can rent one across from the pier. The pier launch is the easiest up here. Using the same rig from shore will get you great results. You just have to cast it right past the breaking waves - easy even with a $25 baitmaker special rod and reel combo. Work the rig right up to your feet - the halibut are there!

An essay about the bane of my existentence, originally published on my (completely reprehensible) humor (well, alleged humor) blog at http://badnewshughes.blogspot.com.
----------
A FEW WORDS ABOUT SALTWATER CATFISH
Whenever someone asks me what kind of fish I caught on a particular day and I grumble, "Just a bunch of catfish," the response is inevitably positive: "Oh, great! I love catfish! Gonna fry 'em up? Mmmm-mmm!" Etc.

NO. NO NO NO NO NO NO NO!

Saltwater catfish (or "Osama fish") are different from their freshwater cousins, and I want to set the record straight: there's nothing positive about the existence of these animals. At all. Many strange and terrible creatures, no matter how superfically despicable, play important roles in the vast, delicate balance of the natural world: experts tell us that mosquitos, rattlesnakes, mean wasps, poodles, stupid people, chihuahuas, ghosts and pterodactyls all have their place in the grand scheme of things, like nasty pieces of some huge, scary puzzle.

But the saltwater catfish is less a fish or other necessary food-chain element than a plague... Some sort of cosmic retribution dreamt up by God to punish humanity for its worst sins. Every time scientists mock natural order by grafting an afro onto to a chicken or inventing a remote-control banana, or a some idiot South American peasant cuts down a tree in a rain forest somewhere to pay for those acid-washed jeans, that terrycloth shirt and that carton of Dorals, Mother Nature's fetid womb opens up and spews forth onto my fishhooks a thousand or two of these hateful, finned child molesters of the sea.

Yeah, that's right - they molest children. They also:

Complain about being hooked in a loud, persistent and distinctly flatulent bark.

Shit all over the place the instant they leave the water. Or maybe they're just constantly shitting - I wouldn't be surprised. Regardless.

Are covered in a thick, translucent, boogery slime that permanently adheres to your line.

Have needle-sharp, venom-coated spines sheathed in their dorsal and pectoral fins.

Are inedible. Some lunatics swear that a certain variety is alright for the table, but how they even made it through all that bukkake dripping off of 'em to skin 'em and give 'em a try is beyond my understanding.

Are plentiful. I have had days where I caught one on every single damn cast, one after the other for hours at a time.

Are indestructible. I release most of my catches and make it a point to be as delicate as possible with fish in general - the poor things didn't ask to be caught, after all, and I want to do everything I can to ensure their survival after I get through harassing and yanking on 'em. Some people delight in killing every saltwater catfish they haul up, but I'm a conservationist at heart and figure I may as well apply my standards across the board. This isn't to say that I haven't occasionally gotten frustrated with the little fuckers and poked 'em in the eye, beat 'em up a bit or launched 'em a few dozen feet into the air during the release process. But no matter how roughly I handle these fish they just bark, shit, ooze, stab me with one of their spines, flip me a bird and swim off laughing and getting ready to jump back on my hook at the earliest opportunity.

I'd rather catch the dread stingray than a saltwater catfish (and believe me, I catch plenty of those fuckers too), even though stingrays have a brittle, poisonous barb on their whiplike tails, not to mention a really, really gross mouth that looks like that movie of a pulsating ventricle or aorta or whatever it was that I had to watch in 6th grade health class. As bothersome and potentially crippling as a stingray encounter may be, these weird alien fish do have a few positive qualities. They're occasionally eaten by the very bored or hungry, and they're usually pretty docile (I even had one bond with me after I unhooked it - damn thing followed me around for half an hour, gazing up at me like a lonely puppy and freaking me out until I dropped a brick on it).

Saltwater catfish, on the other hand, go into some kind of supersonic death twist when they get hooked, rolling like Don Zimmer after a run-in with Pedro Martinez and twisting up your leader while barking, trying to stab you with their deadly fins and getting as much fish poop and slime everywhere as they can muster.

A few years ago I got some crazy idea into my head (fancy that) where I was convinced the sharp spines of the saltwater catfish weren't truly venomous. I figured it was just a misconception based on infections resulting from the occasional puncture, or some old hillbilly canard drummed up to frighten yankees. Then I got stuck. Right in the meaty part of my hand. I didn't die or anything, but it hurt like nothing else I've experienced in an action-packed lifetime filled with injuries, indignities and a significant lack of self-regard. I seem to have recovered pretty nicely, thankfully - some people have experienced permanent paralysis in a finger or hand after a good catfish jab. Though I must admit that since it happened I have had Musical Youth's "Pass the Dutchie" going through my head on a loop, and sometimes get distracted trying to figure out what the hell is a "dutchie" and wondering if maybe those kids weren't a little young to be messing around with dutchies in the first place, if a dutchie is what I suspect it is. And I'm pretty sure that it is.

Anyway, I'm starting to get a little worked up here just thinking about this shit, so to summarize: saltwater catfish are real bad. Don't act all excited at the thought of getting ahold of a mess of 'em for a fish-fry or people in the know will deride you as a hopeless landlubber. And for the good of America, heckle and demean them every chance you get. Thank you.

I love reading about fishing and exchanging tips, stories and information. Ideally this tribe will be an active space for all that good stuff. Knowledgable advice is great, but let's be open to people with all levels of experience, too... I hope enthusiasm will be as valued as expertise here.

I'm not sure if people other than moderators can post pics in the photo album, but if someone can't access it and wants to upload message me and we'll work it out. Hopefully that's a moot point and anyone can just have at it.

Anyway, welcome aboard!

Something about sitting on a bucket in the middle of a frozen waste land gets mt jucies flowing. You will sit there in a massive snow suit like nanuk of the north, waiting ,watching untill finally --------bang-----a school of pearch swim in to youre area. Then all hell breaks loose and every pole and tip up goes off all ate once.People scramble for poles, slideing skateing in a furius attempt to snare that walleye that came roven in with the pearch.
Ive been to devils lake in north dakota and am thinking of another trip--any one heard any news on fishen the ice?
